What We Make.
At Blue Ox Malthouse, we combine modern technology with traditional floor malting methods and regionally produced grains to create consistent, unique, quality malts. We follow the highest quality standards using in-house and ASBC approved methods on all from field to finished product. Check back; we are constantly working to expand our product line.
Pale
Our clean, crisp Pale has mild sweet and grainy flavors and aromas and is fully modified for high extract and enzyme potential. Made from 2-row Newdale barley, our Pale elevates lighter styles like Kolsch, Blondes, Pales, Pilsners and as a foundational malt for any style. 1.8-2.4 SRM.
Wheat
Our lightly kilned Wheat malt provides flavors and aromas of sweet cereals along with light color and high extract. Maybe our favorite malt to see on the germination floor! 2-2.5 SRM.
Dark Munich
Darker color, more intense toasty flavors and aromas come with our melanoidin-rich Dark Munich, along with notes of graham crackers and biscuits. 10-12 SRM.
Smoked Malts
Currently in stock: Applewood– sweet and fruity with medium smokiness and bbq aroma
Custom smoked malts: we’ve used Bourbon Barrel Staves, Applewood, Cherrywood…if it burns, we can smoke with it. Get in touch and let us know what kind of malt you’re looking for!
Organic Pale
Certified Organic by MOFGA, this is our organic version of our Pale malt. Using the same 2-row Newdale variety, this malt is well-modified for high extract and diastatic power. Great base for any organic brew.
Vienna
Pronounced "VYE-enna" in a nod to the town of Vienna, Maine, this malt comes packed with notes of hazelnuts, bread crusts and honey. 3-4 SRM.
Light Caramel
Maine’s first caramel malt! Candy sweetness, toffee, cajeta. 10 SRM.
OG Rye Malt
Deliciously bready, creamy, and slightly spicy.
6 SRM. MOFGA Certified Organic
Yankee Pils
Made with an eye to a gentler process in the steep, germination, and kilning to yield a super light, grainy finish while still well modified for high potential extract. 1.4 SRM.
Light Munich
Our Light Munich is a medium kilned malt giving flavors of lightly toasted bread crust rounded by a deep biscuity sweetness and hints of peanut butter. 4-6 SRM.
Caramel 40
Jam on toast, fig granola, craisins.
40 SRM.
Oat Malt
Mildly nutty and grainy, provides better head retention, fuller
body, and more haze potential.
2 SRM
